Scottish tablet, butter tablet or just plain tablet. Whatever you know it as we can all agree that once tried it is seldom forgotten. Our journey in to the sweet sugary world of tablet began on our market stall with requests from our regular customers. Memories from childhood, a sweet treat made by a grandparent. Memories often come flooding back with a taste, a smell. Our senses can be very powerful reminders of the past.

Despite being generational confectioners, we couldn't quite get our butter tablet exactly how we would have liked it. As always with confectionery a lot of trial and error occurred. Good but not perfect. Eventually, when all else seemed lost, our saving grace appeared in the form of a little Scottish lady visiting Stratford upon Avon on her holidays!

A quick taste, a few words of advice and a family recipe jotted down on a scrap of paper. With that she was gone. But what a good recipe it was. So good in fact that we still use it to this day. Sugary, grainy, sweet and buttery. So there we have it. The Bluebell Cottage approach to butter tablet is all thanks to our little mystery Scottish guardian angel. Thank you wherever you are.
